Purple Cake Day

Purple Cake Day

Happy Purple Cake Day!  March 1 is a day celebrated globally to help raise money for children around the world, and to educate others about what is going on in the world.  If, like me, you have never heard of Purple Cake Day before now, please check them out here.

My awesome friend, Amy (mother of Adam, see his first birthday cake below), put together an amazing week long celebration and fundraising event at the daycare for Purple Cake Day.  She was thoughtful enough to include me in this deal.  She had me make a cake that would be displayed at the daycare all day yesterday, and people could buy raffle tickets to win.  The only instruction that I was given was that it had to be a purple cake.  And, purple it was.  This cake is purple through and through, from the fondant, the icing inside, even the cake itself is purple!!  I hope whoever won the cake was as happy with it as I was!

My friend Sara, is awesome for many reasons, but she has been such a huge blessing to me in my cake skills because anytime she needs a cake for her family, she entrusts me with it! :)   Here is the 7th Birthday Cake that I did for her son a few weeks ago.  He wanted a dirt bike track cake.  Seeing as though I’ve only ever gone to anything like that once (does indoor motocross even count for that?  I don’t know!), I turned to my trusted Google to figure out what they looked like!  Here was the end result!

Happy 13th Birthday!!

Happy 13th Birthday!!

Last month, we celebrated a big birthday in our house…..Christian turned 13!!  In honor of his love of all things super hero, I created him a Mjolnir (Thor’s hammer) cake.  I will admit, this is not my favorite cake. I’m still struggling to learn how to cover rice krispies with fondant, which is what the majority of the hammer was made out of.  However, the important part was that the birthday boy loved it.  And, that’s all that matters :)

Welcome Little One

Welcome Little One

I did my first baby shower cake a few weeks ago.  I know, I know.  I am terrible at keeping this thing updated on a regular basis.  I try, so hard!  I just keep failing :)   Well, I promise to at least keep trying!  This was also my first cake for someone that I personally didn’t know.  It was for a friend of a friend, so I was really nervous about this.  And, on top of that, they wanted a classic Winnie-the-Pooh cake.  That just added to the nervousness level, because Classic Pooh is not all that easy.  The mom-to-be was having a girl, but didn’t wanted anything super girly.  So, here is what I came up:

I was really pleased with how this cake turned out.  I thought the colors were just girly enough, but still muted, so they weren’t overwhelming.  I loved the characters.  Eeyore and Tigger were my favorite!  Winnie-the-Pooh gave me a lot of problems, and is definitely not my favorite, but I think combined with all the other characters, he works.  My absolute favorite part of this cake was the honey bees!

Here are some close-ups of the figures:

Back in the begining of January (I know.  I am so behind.) I made a cupcake-cake.  I have never done anything like that before, so I was really excited to work on this.  I love the color combination, and I think that this is a really cute way to serve cupcakes!

Happy Birthday, Adam!

Happy Birthday, Adam!

This past weekend sweet, adorable, handsome little Adam celebrated his 1st birthday.  His wonderful parents asked me to make his birthday cake.  I was honored!

The little blue cake is Adam’s smash cake.  Which, he didn’t as much smash as try to gum the pieces of fondant.  Note to self: fondant for babies, maybe not the best idea :)

May the Force Be With You…

May the Force Be With You…

I was asked to do a Star Wars cake for this past weekend.  I was pretty excited about.  All my boys love Star Wars.  And, I thought this would be a good chance to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.  I decided that I was going to do an R2D2 cake.  Well, from the very beginning I had problems.  The cakes spilled out of the pan.  I remade them, and they were crusty.  I finally got some acceptable cakes out of the oven.  Then, I tried to stack, carve, and decorate an R2D2 cake.  Needless to say, it did not work out.  It was bad.  Very, very bad.  So, I stayed up until 3:00 in the morning making this, instead:

My crazy, busy, out-of-control, made me sick week :)

My crazy, busy, out-of-control, made me sick week :)

Well, I haven’t updated here lately with the last three cakes I made.  Why, you may ask?  I made all three of these cakes in one week.  Yes, three cakes.  One week.  Oh, and on top of that, I made 10 gingerbread houses for a party we were going to!  And, promptly after I dropped my last cake off I got sick.  Terribly sick.  I was sick for Christmas.  I was sick for the day after Christmas when we celebrated with the boys.  I was not a happy Meg.  Finally, the day Tuesday after Christmas, after being sick for a week and a half, my hubby drug me to Urgent Care and I was diagnosed with a sinus infection.  I left, filled my antibiotic prescription, took one, went to bed and woke up feeling so much better!  So, here are the three cakes that I made during my crazy, busy, out-of-control week!

This is a snowflake cake that I made for our Bible study Christmas party.  It was a marble cake, iced with peppermint buttercream, covered in red peppermint flavored fondant, and topped with royal icing decorations.  A few words about this cake.  I thought that this cake was absolutely gorgeous, and it came together very nicely.  Until I tried to move it.  Everytime I tried to move it, something would break or fall off.  It took me a while, but I finally realized what I did.  I found this cake on Wilton’s website, with directions and even a template for all the decorations that went on top.  Except, the templates were wrong!!  The white parts (I don’t know what they are called), were only supposed to be barely off the edge of the cake, not a couple of inches!!  Now I know never to trust Wilton again!  If done properly, the cake would have been fine.  I will definately keep that in mind for next time :)

Up next is a graduation cake.  This cake literally kicked my butt!!  It was so much harder than I imagined.  I’m not sure why, though, because I know that writing is still one of my weak areas, so I picked out a cake that the whole thing was just about covered in writing!!  Plus, when I bought this cake pan on Amazon, everything I read said it was a two mix cake pan.  As it turned out, it was actually three!!  And, I’ve known for a while that the floors in our hundred plus year old house are unlevel, but it was really accentuated with this cake.  My husband has a new job for next week of getting our oven completely level for me.  I loved the idea of this cake, and just need some more practice on it to perfect it.

Well, I saved my favorite cake for last!  I have always wanted to do a Thomas cake.  Big C LOVED Thomas for years, until someone convinced him that Thomas was for babies, and he decided he couldn’t like him anymore, way too young.  So, I never got to make my Thomas cake.  Until this December!!  My friend’s son was turning 2 and is a huge fan of Thomas.  It was last minute, but I could not pass this opportunity by.  It was so much fun and I’m so happy with how everything turned out.  Here’s to hoping for lots more Thomas cakes in the future!!

And, just for fun, here are the gingerbread houses that I made that week, too.  It was a lot, but I cannot say how glad I am that I did it, and how much fun all the kids had.  I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I Love Snowmen

I Love Snowmen

I do.  I really, really, really do.  That’s why, when I was walking through the grocery the other day, and I saw some cute snowmen cupcakes at the bakery I just knew I had to make some.  With my own twist, of course.  The ones at the bakery had plastic heads on them.  Yeah, I don’t do that here.  So, I made mine with fondants heads/hats/scarves.  Using the leftover batter from a cake I made over the weekend I was able to make 8 adorable snowmen cupcakes.  I actually gave these away, because in no way did I need to eat them.  Plus, I figure that it’s good advertising, right?

So, here they are:

I just whipped these up pretty quickly, so please don’t look too closely at them :)   I think that these cupcakes would be awesome at a kid’s Christmas party at school or church!  There is still time before Christmas if anyone would want some of these adorable snowmen!  And, colors are completely customizable!
